Note: this layout is NOT participating in the CIRROPS 2012 Operations Weekend.
The N&WRRR began in July 1966 as the Miami Valley RR Club. In 1970, the MVRR club moved into the B&O freight house located downtown onVirginia Avenuenext to the Conrail mainline. The club was renamed at that time. In 1979, the Chessie System closed the old B&O freight house, and the search was on for a new permanent club location. In 1981 the club moved into its current building located at1115 McDougall Street, just south ofGarfieldParkoff ofShelby ST. We are very fortunate to be one of a few clubs inIndianathat own their own building. This gives us lots of freedom and we do have enough land for future expansion.
The fictional N&WRRR was incorporated in 1877 after the reorganization of its predecessor lines. The newly created company owned trackage fromEvansvilletoFort Wayneand from Rockdale to Kentland, with the two lines crossing inIndianapolis.
The layout depicts the time from the mid to late 1950’s; the transition era from steam to diesel.
The layout is built in a peninsular design, in a wedding cake format. There are two levels but all built on the same plane. The bench work is open frame. Much of the older scenery is built using the hard shell method using plaster. The road bed was made from 3 splines of vertical homosote glued together and shaped. Corkroadbed was applied over the top in some areas. To form the foundation for towns yard and scenes plywood with homosote on top was used. In our newer scenic endeavors we have started using foam board and plaster cloth to create our scenes. The track used was Atlas code 100.
The reason we keep using 100 is due to the fact that some of the older engines have deep flanges and will not run properly on code 83.
There are 3 yards and 4 switching districts located on the layout. We are also fortunate to have a lot of online industry switching in our 5 towns. There are also 4 junctions on the railroad. Some of the towns on the layout as well as scenes are named for previous members. We can run in continuous loop or a modified point to point.
