Tim Kerkhoff’s Overland Green River Basin

Note: this layout is NOT participating in the CIRROPS 2012 Operations Weekend.

The layout is based on the UP prototype from Ogden, UT to Cheyenne, WY.  The double track main line is a point to point design with dog-bone loops on each end to facilitate turning the trains in staging. Most of the layout is single level but there are areas that are double deck.  There are two staging yards, one on each end that can handle up to 18 trains each. The era is late 50’s where passenger, road freights, and locals are working across the main lines during the session. Big power is the norm and the use of turbines, and diesel lash-ups keep the freight moving. Most of the RR is govern under CTC control where by two dispatchers  control the signals and turnouts on a prototype CTC panel in a separate room.

The operating session takes approx 4 hours and a crew of 18 is needed to keep things moving. There are 4 yards across the layout of which the Green River yard is the largest followed by Ogden. Each of these yards require multiple operators  where as the Laramie and Cheyenne yards can be worked with one operator. Passenger trains need to run on time as they interact with other passenger/mail trains during the session. Passenger operations consist of switching mail/express and passengers cars at most of the towns across the layout. There are 4-5 locals, numerous road freights, and manifest trains that will shuttle cars to the yards for the local trains. Paperwork consists of switch-list for the operators and yards and easy to understand instructions. Communications are handled between the dispatcher and operators via FRS radios. The layout has been built and operating over the last 20 years with the current design being it’s 3rd design.  Scenery work has progressed with approx 60-70% completed with painted backdrops, structures, and numerous mountain and plain scenes. Aisles are typically 3′ wide and carpeted throughout, fold down steps are in place where extra height might be needed.
